Munkholmen

Dating back prior to the founding of Trondheim in 997AD, Monkholmen was a place of execution by the Earls of Lad, the rulers of present day Trøndelag and Hålogaland in Norway. In the 12th century, Monkholmen became home to the Benedictine Monks and the Nidarholm Abbey and after burning down three times the monastery fell into ruin and became the property of the royal estate in Trondheim. In 1658, Monkholmen was fortified following the siege of Trondheim during the Dano-Swedish war and was also used as a prison for societies rejects. In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway and quickly developed a submarine base in Trondheim fitting Monkholmen with anti-aircraft weapons and retrofitting the fort for ammunition storage.

Nidaros Cathedral

Beginning as a small chapel built over the burial site of King Olav II Haraldsson, Nidaros Cathedral grew to its current size over hundreds of years and became Christendom's most important sanctuary in Northern Europe drawing people from around Europe to make this pilgrimage for almost a 1000 years.

Old Town Bridge

Also called the Old Town Bridge, Game Bybroen was constructed along with the rebuilding of Trondheim after the great fire in 1861. The bridge was constructed with military strategic significance in mind along with the Kristiansten Fortress to the east. The bridge was constructed with a toll and guardhouse at either end and an iron gate was placed in the centre of the bridge and remained a guarded city gate until 1816. Gamle Bybro is also known as Lykkens portal (Gate of Happiness), after the lyrics of the popular waltz Nidelven stille og vakker du er ( "Nidelven quiet and beautiful you are") by Norwegian singer and composer Kristian Oskar Hoddø (1916-1943). Old Wharf Buildings on the Nidelva River

Wharves, warehouses and boathouses have lined this portion of the Nidelva River for centuries and were even used as defences where rocks could be thrown at the enemy. Presently they house restaurants, stores and living accommodations, many of them dating back as far as the 18th century.

Vår Frue kirke (Our Lady's Church)

This medieval church was first constructed in the mid to late 1100's but needed rebuilding numerous times due to fire with the oldest remaining part dating back to the 1200's. The church is built on top of a network of burial cellars where more than 100 people were buried between 1681 and 1805.
